Overview

About Uganda Dialogue Arena

The UDA is a platform that brings together young students to a common platform where they are able to tackle national pertinent issues through debate and dialogue.

It was founded in late 2009 as the Uganda Youth Debating Society (UYDS) with a sole aim of championing debate in institutions of learning and the general public as well grooming student leaders through interaction. It has changed name on the advice of Registrar General to The Uganda Dialogue Arena and is fully registered by Guarantee. Some individuals mistook it for the Uganda Young Democrats, a Democratic Party (DP) Youth wing.

What we do

The Uganda Dialogue Arena has been organizing debates, workshops and seminars in several institutions of learning from 2009.

In July 2014 a National Youth Debate was successfully organized and held at the National Theatre with the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament as Guest of Honour. This year alone, UDA has held 5 regional youth debates with over 60 secondary schools thus reaching out to more than 1500 passionate young debaters and future leaders.

UDA was incepted by a group of visionary, charismatic, patriotic and resilient student leaders with passion for debate. They were driven by the desire to see Institutions of learning produce intellectuals and modern day philosophers who will keep the African dream alive especially at this time when we are faced with many challenges including but not limited to disease and ignorance.

Debating helps to groom a branded citizen with values and who is tolerant to the divergent views of their opponents. Debate is a skill that enables one to advance their views for action without any confrontation.

The quality of debate in Uganda

The quality of debate in Uganda today especially among the young generation is wanting; some graduates are unable to sustain a conversation in English (which is Uganda’s official language). Some are shy and may fear to put across their ideas to solve problems, as a result, many riots and chaotic demonstrations have sprung up almost regularly in many parts of the World.

Way forward

Every individual is thus called upon to embrace and support debate and public speaking in Uganda among the young generation.
