Uganda Dialogue Arena (UDA).

The UDA is a platform that brings together young students to a common platform where they are able to tackle national pertinent issues through debate and dialogue.

It was founded in late 2009 as the Uganda Youth Debating Society (UYDS) with a sole aim of championing debate in institutions of learning and the general public as well grooming student leaders through interaction. It has changed name on the advice of Registrar General to The Uganda Dialogue Arena and is fully registered by Guarantee. Some individuals mistook it for the Uganda Young Democrats, a Democratic Party (DP) Youth wing.

The Uganda Dialogue Arena has been organizing debates, workshops and seminars in several institutions of learning from 2009.

In July 2014 a National Youth Debate was successfully organized and held at the National Theatre with the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament as Guest of Honour. This year alone, UDA has held 5 regional youth debates with over 60 secondary schools thus reaching out to more than 1500 passionate young debaters and future leaders.

From its inception, UDA has reached out to more 9000 students and the youths across the country. Recently, a partnership was created with some Rwanda Institutions of learning. The Patron is education consultant Mr. Fagil M. Mandy.

We strive to promote self-esteem among the underprivileged especially the girl child and upcountry institutions which may not have sufficient exposure like their urban counterparts. More women are encouraged to participate in debates by assigning them roles to chair debate sessions, mobilise fellow women in their institutions among other means.

UDA was incepted by a group of visionary, charismatic, patriotic and resilient student leaders with passion for debate. They were driven by the desire to see Institutions of learning produce intellectuals and modern day philosophers who will keep the African dream alive especially at this time when we are faced with many challenges including but not limited to disease and ignorance.

Debating helps to groom a branded citizen with values and who is tolerant to the divergent views of their opponents. Debate is a skill that enables one to advance their views for action without any confrontation.

The quality of debate in Uganda today especially among the young generation is wanting; some graduates are unable to sustain a conversation in English (which is Uganda’s official language). Some are shy and may fear to put across their ideas to solve problems, as a result, many riots and chaotic demonstrations have sprung up almost regularly in many parts of the World.

Regions covered so far include Western (Kigezi, Nkore, Rwenzori), Eastern (Busoga Sub region), Central (Kampala and Greater Masaka).

UDA has also planned the 3rd National Inter University Debate, Health Camp and skills expo In September to be hosted at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono. In 2014 (National Theatre) 2015 (Makerere University), 2016 (Kyambogo University).

UDA has established a relationship with ASPIRE DEBATE RWANDA where Uganda Universities have been coordinated to attend the E.African Inter University Debate in Kigali in 2016 and vice versa.

This year on March 18th, the Western School debate championship was held at Muntuyera High School-Kitunga in Ntugamo district while the 2nd edition of the Busoga School Debate Championship was held at Busoga College Mwiri on 8th April, 2017.

Every individual is thus called upon to embrace and support debate and public speaking in Uganda among the young generation.

The brain behind this is Fredrick T. Musiimenta, an author of a famous debate book “THE WINNING DEBATE, Public Debate Redefined”, a motivational speaker, career guidance expert.
